Manchester United's 4-3 win over Liverpool in August feels like a distant memory, a freak result that has been followed by a series of disappointing performances from the Red Devils.
On Saturday, United were once again fortunate to escape with a point against their bitter rivals. Liverpool dominated the first half, creating numerous chances but failing to convert. Mohamed Salah missed a sitter from close range, while Darwin Nunez spurned a glorious opportunity with a header from six yards.
United were much improved after the break, and they took the lead through Jadon Sancho. Marcus Rashford then doubled their advantage, but Liverpool fought back with goals from Fabio Carvalho and Salah.
The draw leaves Liverpool in seventh place in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. United are a further three points behind in ninth.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was understandably frustrated after the game. "We had enough chances to win this game three or four times over," he said. "We need to be more clinical in front of goal."
United manager Erik ten Hag was more upbeat, despite his team's unconvincing performance. "I'm happy with the result," he said. "We showed great character to come back from behind. We need to keep improving, but this is a step in the right direction."
The match was also notable for the performance of 17-year-old Rhys Mainoo. The defender made his first start for United, and he impressed with his maturity and composure. Mainoo's performance will give ten Hag food for thought as he looks to build a team capable of challenging for the Premier League title.
