Mercury bring back Amy Atwell on short-term contract after being waived

The Mercury have re-signed forward Amy Atwell on a one-month contract after she was waived by the team in February.

Atwell, 28, averaged 4.9 points and 3.2 rebounds in 22 games for the Mercury last season.

The 6-foot-3 forward was waived by the Mercury on Feb. 10 to make room for the signing of forward Breanna Stewart.

Atwell said she is excited to be back with the Mercury and is looking to make the most of her opportunity.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to be back with the Mercury," Atwell said.

"I'm excited to be back in Phoenix and I'm looking forward to helping the team win games."

Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard said she is relieved to have Atwell back on the team.

"We're happy to have Amy back," Nygaard said.

"She's a great player and she's a great teammate."

Atwell could make her debut for the Mercury on Saturday when they host the Las Vegas Aces.

The Mercury are currently 4-5 on the season and are looking to improve their record.

Atwell's return could give the Mercury a boost as they look to make a playoff push.
